Have you read our most recent blog post yet? If yo Have you read our most recent blog post yet? If you haven’t, you’re definitely missing out. 🤷

We sat down for a Q&A with one of our wonderful staff, Mira, who answered some of our burning questions! @mirajgreely is our Technical Writer, and her amazing writing skills certainly show through in her answers!📍[circelconsulting.ca/community]👀

You’ll have to check out the full blog post on our website but here’s a quick sneak peek of what Mira had to say when asked: ⭐️“What do you find more rewarding about your work?”⭐️

✨“Knowing that I’m contributing to the preservation and conservation of history and culture, and that I’m getting more opportunities to engage in truth and reconciliation efforts.

It feels incredible to help ensure that archaeological sites and the history of this nation and its first peoples are recorded, preserved, and understood. It’s rewarding to help bridge the gaps between the discipline, its proponents, and the Indigenous peoples of this country. We only get one chance to preserve and foster such things in this life, and I’m proud to be part of both an industry leading those efforts and a company striving daily to be an industry leader.”✨

New podcast alert! 🚨 Ken from the Inegma Podca New podcast alert! 🚨

Ken from the Inegma Podcast sat down with our very own Margarita de Guzman, CEO of Circle, to explore the life journeys of professionals and business owners. 🔉👂

Ken and Marg discuss the journey that she took, from university to work experience, and getting Circle to where it is today, but also what she learned getting here!

👉 Although this isn’t a podcast you’re gonna want to miss, here is one of our biggest takeaways:

“...we really are trying to change the industry, as slowly as that might be, in raising the bar on how archeology is done, in raising the bar on the customer service we provide and raising the bar on how we treat our staff” 📈

Marg is constantly trying to make a meaningful impact across the whole industry and lift people up. This is a big reason she founded @thefairfieldfoundation and this goes directly with our why, our True North, aka, the reason we do what we do when we aren’t talking about archaeology. 💓

Our “why” here at Circle is to create a sustainable
workplace where archaeologists can find stability and longevity. We love what we do, but this is a tough industry to be in. If we strive for greatness, we can grow and bring
more people along for the ride. 🤝

For us field archaeologists, shovel testing is a v For us field archaeologists, shovel testing is a vital part of understanding the land and the impact prospective work will have archaeologically before any project moves forward. But for most people, it may not be something you’ll ever do. 🤷

So, what exactly do we mean when we say “we’re shovel testing”? We’ll give you the quick rundown here but check out our blog [circleconsulting.ca/community] to read about the whole shovel testing process! 📍

⭐️ Out in the field, shovel test areas usually consist of at least 10 subsurface tests, usually placed 5m apart, within an area the permit holder or field supervisor has identified as having high potential with help from the field maps made by our wonderful GIS staff.

🪨 Each test involves digging below the A horizon (also referred to as top soil) and continuing down to where we believe human activity was unlikely–aka glacial or basal deposits.

📏 Each shovel test itself is 40cm on each side and every bit of soil is screened through 6 mm mesh, and stratigraphic data is recorded.

🗺️ If nothing turns up in our shovel tests, they are considered negative and each one is marked on the GPS. If shovel tests turn up artifacts, that means we’ve hit a positive test – and things have gotten a lot more interesting...

But you’ll have to check out our blog to read the rest! ✨ “Circle Does: Shovel Testing”

Have you ever read over the “services” section Have you ever read over the “services” section of our website?

If not, here’s a sneak peak… And keep an eye out for our next blog post about shovel testing! 👀

Let’s start at the beginning, and although we have talked about GIS and how the GIS software streamlines archaeological assessments (check out that post if you haven’t), we haven’t really explained the assessments themselves, aka, AOAs and AIAs!

✨An Archaeological Overview Assessment (AOA) is used to determine archaeological potential within project areas!

🖥️It’s a desktop assessment utilizing GIS, incorporating a number of different tools and variables, including the BC Remote Access to Archaeological Data (RAAD), topographic data, and environmental data.

👉The AOA will result in recommendations for either No Further Work, or for an Archaeological Impact Assessment (AIA).

☝️When a project is deemed to have moderate to high potential for intact archaeological resources, a field assessment will determine the presence and/or extent of any cultural material that exists within project boundaries and if deemed to be of high historic resource significance and are under threat of impact, avoidance or further work will be recommended!

⭐️If avoidance is not practical, the developer can opt for site alteration through Section 12 of the Heritage Conservation Act.

February flew by! ✈️ We can’t believe it’ February flew by! ✈️

We can’t believe it’s already March. Next month - in April - we have our spring kickoff coming up, which means that field season is near!

In February we were hard at work in the lab finishing up the bulk of our cataloguing and winter lab work - and had a pizza party of course! 🍕

🗣️ We had a few staff members attend the ASA Speaker Series on “Napi is the Environment: Integrating Oral Tradition and Science in the Blackfoot World”.

☀️ We had a few staff away on holidays or away spending some time with their loved ones so we really hope they got some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

🎉 As you all know, we also got a new permit holder this past month, congrats again Ashley, and we cannot wait for more of these announcements in the (hopefully near) future!

⭐️ Last but not least, we had a few job fairs that Circle attended in February (and more coming up in March) such as the SFU 4th Annual CRM Expo that our CEO Margarita de Guzman was a panelist for, and we want to make a call out to all of you. If you or anyone you know who is in archaeology (or anthropology) and is a student or interested in becoming one - check out some job fairs around your area, there is so much to be learned from those actually in the industry, those who understand the struggles! 🤝

New Blog Post Alert ‼️ 🌟 This month we ta New Blog Post Alert ‼️

🌟 This month we talk about “Fieldwork To Final Report” aka, what happens to the data after we have completed fieldwork for the Historical Resources Impact Assessment (HRIA), gathered notes, artifacts, and valuable data. 📍 Check out our newest blog post to read more! It’s on our website [circleconsulting.ca] under Community!

You may also be wondering... what is an HRIA? Let us tell you all about it! 🔊

🗒️ When a project is identified as having high potential for intact historic resources, a field assessment is carried out to check for any cultural materials within the project area.

✨ If these resources are found to be significant and at risk of being affected by the project, steps will be taken to avoid or protect them.

🦺 If avoidance isn’t an option, the developer can choose to have us, Circle, carry out a Historic Resources Impact Mitigation (HRIM).

👆 Mitigative investigations call for controlled excavations that detail and record past occupations. This may also lead to more work to further protect or manage the resources depending on the extent of the recovered material.

Highly valued for its numerous medicinal uses, Bog Highly valued for its numerous medicinal uses, Bog Labrador tea, or Rhododendron groenlandicum, is an especially bog-loving species able to tolerate standing water and stresses like low nutrients and acidic soils. White flowers can be found in clusters that flower from April – June. 🤍

These valuable plants are found all over Canada (and more), and we often encounter Labrador Tea in the areas where we work, so being fortunate enough to learn about the traditional uses of plants that we encounter is so important to the work we do! 🍃

These delicate blooms have been used for centuries by various Indigenous cultures and people for their medicinal properties; Bog Labrador Tea has remained an important part of Indigenous herbal knowledge. 🌱 The leaves have been used as a blood purifier, diuretic, analgesic, and general tonic. ☕️ Brewed into a tea, it can help with colds, stomach aches, and asthma. An infusion can also be used to clean wounds, insect bites, and rashes.

As just a couple examples, the Cree used an infusion of the flowers for insect sting pain and rheumatism, using a poultice of leaves to apply to wounds, and the Oweekeno used an infusion of leaves as a remedy for a sore throat. 💧🌿

As with any medicine, it is important to seek expert guidance. Especially since Labrador tea grows next to bog laurel, which is poisonous to animals and people and too much of anything can be bad, so more than 1 cup of Labrador Tea a day isn’t recommended.

Huge thanks to Jared, holding the flower in the photo, for sharing some of his knowledge with us and teaching us about the use of Bog Labrador Tea flowers in dealing with bug bites and stings.
