Julien Favreau

Julien began working at Circle in August 2024 as an Assistant Archaeologist and is now a Supervising Archaeologist! He earned a BA and MA in Archaeology from the University of Calgary and is a recent PhD graduate from McMaster University, where he held a Joseph- Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship. His research interests broadly include human evolution, biogeography, lithic technology, and raw material sourcing. He has conducted fieldwork in British Columbia, Alberta, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania. Julien has also conducted laboratory research at the University of Calgary and McMaster University dealing with stone tools, artifactual residues, microbotanical remains, and mineralogical and geochemical samples. For his doctoral research, Julien worked in the McMaster Archaeological XRF Lab, where he studied geological specimens and stone tools originating from Oldupai Gorge (formerly Olduvai) to determine from which outcrops Pleistocene hominins obtained rocks to manufacture stone tools. In his free time, Julien enjoys hiking and camping, but admittedly doesn’t get out as much as he would like!
