A basic lesson in the sequence of the world

April 26, 2011October 23, 2017

Thanks again SwissMiss for the tip on this video, via Devour. If any of you were wondering what came first, the caveman or the Egyptian, find out here (among other things)… and all they really wanted to do was water a flower!?

On Wednesday, March 29, @brooksie_g is leading our On Wednesday, March 29, @brooksie_g is leading our Wisdom Wednesday to talk about the St. Hubertโ€™s settlement in Rural Saskatchewan. If you've ever been interested in how people managed to establish their homes in tough prairie conditions, you'll want to tune in! Read the full synopsis below, and make sure to click the link in our bio to join the Zoom at noon MDT with the password 384366.

St. Hubertโ€™s Mission is a small Franco Belgian Settlement on the Saskatchewan Prairies with a quirky legacy. St. Hubertโ€™s was founded by French counts in the mid 1800s, and, funnily enough, the town of Whitewood is comprised of the descendants of the labourers and servants that came with the counts and remained after all the counts' business ventures failed due to the brutal prairie climate. What remains of St. Hubertโ€™s now is a Catholic church, a mission hospital (that was burnt to the ground in the early 2010s), a giant cross on a hill (made by Brooke's ancestors), Brooke's childhood home, a single Masterโ€™s dissertation, and a smattering of family grave sites.

Tomorrow, our Wisdom Wednesday will be hosted by J Tomorrow, our Wisdom Wednesday will be hosted by Jode, who has over 20 years of archaeological experience, 13 of which have been spent in Alberta as a field archaeologist and site supervisor. The topic will be on paleolithic cave art in France and Spain - an interesting one! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

In archaeology, cave paintings are a type of parietal art (which includes pictographs, petroglyphs, and engravings), typically found on the wall or ceilings of caves and rock shelters. The term generally implies a prehistoric origin, where the oldest known examples are more than 60,000 years old. Typically, these oldest examples areย representations of hand stencils and simple geometric shapes (and attributed to Neanderthal). They represent some of the earliest forms of artistic expression which have survived within the archaeological record. This presentation will focus on two caves visited during 2023, the Prehistoric Cave of Gargas (Grottes des Gargas, France) and the Cave of Altamira (Spain).

Tap into this knowledge by joining us on Zoom at noon MST tomorrow (Wednesday) - link in bio with the passcode 384366.

Happy International Women's Day! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ This yea Happy International Women's Day! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ This year's IWD theme is "Embrace Equity," and we couldn't agree more. In a demanding industry like Archaeology, we have so much respect for the women in the field who are balancing home life and work life on a day-to-day basis. It's not easy, and we commend each and every one of you for it. The exit of women out of the industry is one of the reasons why our non-profit @thefairfieldfoundation exists - to keep women in the industry and to creative a supportive community.

How are you embracing equity?

If you've ever been interested in large-scale heritage projects, you'll want to tune in! Read the full synopsis below, and make sure to click the link in our bio to join the Zoom at noon MST with the password 384366.

โ€œAt the centre of Scotland's Heart of the Neolithic, a UNESCO World Heritage site, an incredible ancient complex is being uncovered. A decade of excavation at the archaeological site known as the Ness of Brodgar, has revealed an amazing quality of diverse archaeological material representing over a millennium of activity (3200 BC to 2300 BC). This site has revealed the largest collection of dressed and decorated stone from Neolithic Britain, a complex collection of pottery from far reaches of Scotland and some of the first evidence of painted walls in Northern Europe. All of this indicates that we need to reevaluate Britainโ€™s stone age. This early Orcadian farming community may have been the epicenter of Britainโ€™s megalithic culture, which culminated centuries later at Stonehenge.โ€
