Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, this day is also Orange Shirt Day. It recognizes the tragic legacy of residential schools, the missing children, the families left behind and the survivors of these institutions. What does this day encourage us to do? Learn! Learn something about the systems and policies that led to establishment of residential schools. Listen! Listen to the stories of the people impacted by intergenerational trauma. Look! Look around at the biases and inequality that First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people still face in Canada. Lead! Lead the conversation about a future of reconciliation with your community, family, and friends. Check out links in the bio for events in Calgary and Edmonton this week.

Yesterday was World Mental Health Day. How could w Yesterday was World Mental Health Day. How could we miss it? Mental health is front of mind for us, especially as our work is both physically and mentally demanding. It is tougher at this time of year because our crews have fatigue from working hard all season, and the work gets harder as the temperatures fall, as does the snow (not yet not yet!). Check our link in bio for a document on supporting your mental health and well being, provided by our benefits providers SunLife. Ask yourself: How you doin?

It is National Truth and Reconciliation Week, with It is National Truth and Reconciliation Week, with September 30 the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. There are many resources out there to help people understand what this day means and what reconciliation means. We subscribe to the @indigenouscorporatetraining newsletter and they recently reshared a post from 2021 that takes a deeper look at what reconciliation. We invite you read it, share it, and join us in looking for ways to take our commitment to reconciliation one step further.

Alexandra (@_alexandraburchill_ ), or Alex for sho Alexandra (@_alexandraburchill_ ), or Alex for short, has nearly a decade of experience working as an archaeologist at various locations throughout western Canada. In 2016, Alex became an approved permit holder in Alberta, and after a couple of stints as a Regulatory Approvals Coordinator and Indigenous Consultation and Engagement Administrator, Alex decided to return to the field doing archaeological assessments and joined the Circle team. She signed on in 2019 and we haven’t looked back! Now Alex manages our largest forestry programs and this month, will be leading a crew of ten in the Yukon! We’re looking forward to seeing what else Alex can do as she continuously grows. Let’s settle into this session of Females in the Field!

It’s officially Fall! But why the long face? Fal It’s officially Fall! But why the long face? Fall is the best season for fieldwork - the bugs are gone and the temperatures are milder. The only thing is that fall is usually quickly followed by winter and we have a lot of work to do. Big shout out to our crews who continue to work hard and work right, as we like to say!

It's back to school time! This is a sad day for us It's back to school time! This is a sad day for us, even though we are so excited for what lies ahead for this guy. Ewald has been a dedicated, hardworking, and all around amazing Field Director, but he has decided to go back to school and get yet another degree. I don't know how he can get even more interesting, but let's find out. All the best to you @ewaldvr!

As students get ready to go back to school, and as As students get ready to go back to school, and as we (regularly) think about our core values, one of them is continuously grow. I (@margdeguzman 🙋🏻‍♀️) recently (finally) listened to the audio version of Drive by Daniel Pink. @stackdconsulting taught me about autonomy, mastery, and purpose, and I wanted to learn more about it. One thing (among many) that really stood out is that mastery is an asymptote. What even is an asymptote? That was my first thought. But when it was explained, about how it is about continuous growth and a consistent desire to be better, I loved it. We are always striving to be better, and the realization that we will never actually get there (because asymptote!) brought a little tension off of my shoulders; it's the journey towards mastery that is part of the mastery itself. Am I right?! Am I nerding out? You tell me 👇 #archaeology #crmarch #corevalues #continuouslygrow #loveyourjob #mastery #asymptote #wordoftheday
We are celebrating SEVEN YEARS for @amandolin.wong We are celebrating SEVEN YEARS for @amandolin.wong - she came to us as at a career fair (those are pretty successful for us!) and started as a practicum student. She is a rock star and has always risen to the occasion. When our business was really affected by fires, I told her that the future was uncertain. Her response made me realize that she would get snapped up in an instant, so I couldn't let her get away. Now she is both AB Project Administrator and Manager of Technical Services, making sure our reports look amazing and all our GIS is on point. Thank you, Amanda, for everything you do!

We’re back with our monthly deep dives with our We’re back with our monthly deep dives with our staff! This month, we sat down with Trevor aka Dr. Trevor Peck aka niokska iikimann (Three Feathers), which is his Blackfoot name that he was honoured with in 2014. Trevor is the author of Light from Ancient Campfires, which is the most comprehensive research on archaeology on the Northern Plains (get it here!), and is our Manager of People, Partners, and Research, as well as being a Senior Archaeologist and Permit Holder for Alberta projects. Trevor was recently and randomly gifted a tower of Diet Coke along with some Reese peanut butter cups and a Star Wars card; his team really knows him and appreciates him! We do a lot of work in advance of forestry and we We do a lot of work in advance of forestry and we know that it is a necessary industry, but sometimes a tree is so majestic that we can't help but give it some love. When our crew finds a site, we flag a buffered area in the forest, and each tree that gets a flag effectively gets saved. Do we hug them before we flag them? Do they hug us back? Field lunch can be a challenge if you're used to sushi, steak or paninis. 👸 And if you've been doing this job for a long time, you might be like me and hate sandwiches. But, you can get clever with your "sandwiches" and instead have "charcuterie" which is only in quotes because you can't put it on a fancy wooden board. Or can you?!

What's your typical field lunch? Is that different from your ideal field lunch? Let us know! 👇

We have a lot of people on shift break right now a We have a lot of people on shift break right now and that leaves us wondering what they're up to. We hope they are taking their much needed and well deserved rest!

Back in the day, shifts were a lot longer; people were expected to be away from home for 3 to 4 weeks at a time or more. Nowadays, everyone recognizes the importance of rest, and we provide rest above and beyond what is required in Employment Standards. But what does rest mean to you? What do you do on your breaks? We are polling our staff - stay tuned for the results!
