On the International Day of Archaeology, we bring On the International Day of Archaeology, we bring you a screen full of rocks! Some of these are gravels, but a lot of them are culturally modified; that is, they are pieces of lithic debitage, which are the waste flakes from making stone tools (swipe left for an example!). The majority of items we find are debitage of a variety of raw materials; in this case, we are looking at Beaver River Sandstone, which is typical for sites in the Lower Athabasca Region, aka Alberta's oil sands. Hundreds of thousands of artifacts have been found in the oil sands in advance of development; there is an entire exhibit dedicated to it at the RAM (@royal_alberta_museum) - check it out! Sometimes the quantities are so high, we like to throw all the twigs and gravels into the bag for the lab to sort out. We bet they love it!

What are you doing on the International Day of Archaeology?

We have been so busy, we missed celebrating a very We have been so busy, we missed celebrating a very important workiversary! Tyler (@tstat0) has been with us now for five years, starting as an Assistant Archaeologist then becoming a Supervising Archaeologist, one that is requested by our permit holders and is considered to be consistently reliable and dependable. Tyler is currently working on his Masters in Heritage Resource Management through @sfuarchaeology on the road to becoming an Alberta permit holder; we are also "encouraging" him to become a Field Director for the Interior Plateau (wink wink we are still hiring for this position). Thank you, Tyler, for your hard work and dedication, and for being an all-around great person to work with. Cheers! 🥳🌟🎉

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, this day is also Orange Shirt Day. It recognizes the tragic legacy of residential schools, the missing children, the families left behind and the survivors of these institutions. What does this day encourage us to do? Learn! Learn something about the systems and policies that led to establishment of residential schools. Listen! Listen to the stories of the people impacted by intergenerational trauma. Look! Look around at the biases and inequality that First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people still face in Canada. Lead! Lead the conversation about a future of reconciliation with your community, family, and friends. Check out links in the bio for events in Calgary and Edmonton this week.

Mental health is front of mind for us, especially as our work is both physically and mentally demanding. It is tougher at this time of year because our crews have fatigue from working hard all season, and the work gets harder as the temperatures fall, as does the snow (not yet not yet!). Check our link in bio for a document on supporting your mental health and well being, provided by our benefits providers SunLife. Ask yourself: How you doin?

Alexandra (@_alexandraburchill_ ), or Alex for sho Alexandra (@_alexandraburchill_ ), or Alex for short, has nearly a decade of experience working as an archaeologist at various locations throughout western Canada. In 2016, Alex became an approved permit holder in Alberta, and after a couple of stints as a Regulatory Approvals Coordinator and Indigenous Consultation and Engagement Administrator, Alex decided to return to the field doing archaeological assessments and joined the Circle team. She signed on in 2019 and we haven’t looked back! Now Alex manages our largest forestry programs and this month, will be leading a crew of ten in the Yukon! We’re looking forward to seeing what else Alex can do as she continuously grows. Let’s settle into this session of Females in the Field!
